Syncing Your Durable Laptop Data

By Allyson Westcot

There are a range of methods to keep your info in sync among multiple laptops, both paid and free. Some are instant, and some require a bit of forethought and work on your side. Identify which is best for you personally, and you'll always have the most updated files in easy reach.

You might set up a net-based e-mail account and email the most recent version of a document to that email. It's easy to download when you're at another computer to save it over the old info. You can use a free, net-based email so you can access it from anywhere simply.

You could also copy the files from your system to a USB drive so you'll always have the updated document. The hazards here are losing the drive or having it fail. A syncing service may be the best for those who travel frequently and work on the road with rugged laptops.

How you opt to sync files will have lots to do with whether you'll need to pay for a service. Google Docs and other identical services are free, and let you access your files from anywhere. There are free and paid options if you want documents to sync between devices either at regular intervals or on-the-fly.

A cloud service that keeps a copy of your files on its server and syncs them between devices could be ideal. Many permit you to use the service free if you limit the overall size of your total files to 1 or 2 megabytes, or they might have a 30-day or 60-day free trial so that you can get a feel for the interface. Paid services may offer more features, permit larger storage limits or have different methods of input that may be easier for you. The key is to research the various services scrupulously before parting with your money to make certain you get exactly what you want.
